The first book, El Roi—has the perfect title name. It is written very well and places you into a scenario of sec trafficking they I’m sure had happened many times across the world. As a previous social worker, I have worked with this population and felt the main character really embodied the mentality of those who have been abused. Such a good story and brings much needed awareness.
Ashes of the Nation has a powerful quote. ““The truth has enemies.” This story is set decades into the future. A man’s sister has gone missing and the country he was born and raised in—despite being educated abroad/ in the United States—isn’t helping him find her. It sucks when our own countries aren’t helping us. This story includes activism and a small collective group who calls out injustice weather its young girls being taken, boys becoming soldiers, or villages being plundered.
The In Between offers a totally different spin, focusing on motivation and a young woman who encourages families to feed their children healthy healthy food. I know we all go online looking for recipes but in this country, where they didn’t have all similar food as what might be considered popular, the main character opened up a new path for her people, all around the gist God gave her. Cooking! I love foodie fiction, so this was nice, especially amongst the more harsher, but equally important topics in this anthology.
Book four, He Calls for Her, incorporates somewhat of a second chance romance—one of my favorite tropes—where a young man helps his good friend who is a trauma victim. I just loved all of his prayers for her, and that he even prayed over her in her presence.
The Old Rugged Cross and The Weight of Our Blood both were eye-opening reads.
I particular liked how Double Portion brought in elements of Job’s story from the Bible. This line moved me: Grief is loud in the beginning. And also the quote about faith at the end. Very beautifully written.
I felt very bad for Angus in the last story. All the stories were great, but they were a lot shorter than what I’m used to. But I love the message, testimony and encouragement the authors bring.
