I couldn’t stop reading. I sobbed, I cheered, I wanted the best for these women. And yes I know they’re characters but Sarah Hanks brought sisters—Everly and Ivy—along with their ancestor, Henrietta, to life.
As grown women, Everly deeply regrets her teenage decision to give up her child, and her sister battles cancer and the loss of her uterus. The scenario is a tear jerker for sure, but I saw parallels in both women and Henrietta, who covertly went to the Civil war. While other women in the 1860s struggled to survive and eat, Henrietta found purpose.
Christian takeaway:
To be honest, I’m satisfied if a story contains some verses. As if the mere references of God’s name is enough for a story to be called Christian fiction. But this story interwove faith and growing closer to Christ in a way that will touch your soul. It made me reflect on certain aspects about myself that had changed over the years. Yes, I’ve felt what these sisters and their great great great …. gran has felt. Whatever It Takes even offered an opportunity for me to have a conversation with God regarding what He truly loves about me. Simply beautiful. This is a must read!
